Part One in our ultimate guide, helping you know your body type.
First off we want to remind you, that everybody type is beautiful.
That bodies come in a wonderful variety of shapes and sizes. That is one of the things that make them so interesting.
It is also important to remember that there is no “average” or “typical” body. As Simone Scully says ‘Some of us are curvier, some of us have narrower hips or broader shoulders – we’re all a little bit different.’
But, in the general sense, most of us will be able to categorize our body type into a few broad categories.
‘For example, a 2004 study reported that descriptions of female bodies have historically been described in categories based on shapes, such as triangle, rectangle, diamond, oval, square and hourglass.’
You are likely to have heard the terms, pear, apple, hourglass and maybe a few others.
This study shows that really not that many women at all know their body type. Only 10% of British women can correctly identify their own body shape.
Body Type Quiz
We know there are many variations with the different body types. If you don’t feel that the answer you got on the quiz was a completely accurate representation. Or if you just want a little bit more information, take a look at the following sections.
Rectangle, Straight, or Banana Body Type
If your waist measures to a similar size as your hips and bust, and your shoulders and hips are about the same width, you have a so-called banana or rectangle body type.
Triangle or ‘Pear’ Shape
For this body type, ‘your shoulders and bust are narrower than your hips.
You are likely to have slim arms and fairly defined waistline. ‘You waist most likely slopes out to your hips.’
Spoon Body Type
This body type is quite similar to the triangle shape, as the hips are larger than the bust or the rest of your body. Both body types
Although the pear and spoon body types are very similar, they have a noticeable difference when it comes to the hips. For pear-shaped women, their hips ‘gradually slope out from the waist’ creating a line that is smooth and curved’. As for a spoon body type, the hips are described to almost ‘jut out from the waist, creating a noticeable “shelf”.
You are more than likely to have a defined waist. You might carry some weight on your upper arms and upper thighs.
‘If your hips and bust are nearly equal in size and you have a well-defined waist that’s narrower than both, you have an hourglass shape.’
Your legs and upper body are likely to be balanced in their proportions to each other.
‘Your shoulders may be slightly rounded, and you most likely have a rounded bottom’.
‘As a top hourglass, you have the general hourglass shape, but your bust measurements are slightly larger than your hips’.
As a bottom hourglass, you have the general hourglass shape, but instead of equal hip and shoulder proportions, your hips measures are slightly large than those of your bust.
Inverted Triangle or Apple Shape
If your bust and shoulders and larger than your hips, which are proportionally narrower, you have this body type.
Round or Oval
You have this body type if your bust is larger than the rest of your body, your midsection is fuller, and your hips are narrow.
Your hips are broader than your shoulders, a narrow bust and fuller waistline, you have what’s referred to as a diamond body shape.
‘With this type, you may carry a little more weight in your upper legs. You may also have slender arms.’
Athletic Body Type
‘If your body is muscular but isn’t particularly curvy, you might have an athletic body type.’
It is likely that your hip and shoulder measurements are very similar. That your waist is narrower than your shoulders and hips, but ‘it isn’t overly-defined and looks more straight up and down.’
